One of the issues that many individuals overlook in regards to their transition from military to civilian life is the anxiety that may accompany leaving the life that they have grown to know and expect on a daily basis. Your Navy out-processing should be an enjoyable transition to civilian life and possibly a second career, not a process full of stress and unanswered questions.
In a recent interview with a Vietnam veteran, I had the opportunity to ask about his transition from sailor life to civilian life. His answer was short and sweet: there was no "transition." After pushing through a typhoon while in the South Pacific, the vessel was severely damaged and was to be decommissioned upon returning to the United States. All things had been taken care of aboard the ship: Equipment returned, departmental lists checked, a clean bill of health issued, and upon arriving in San Diego, he walked off the ship and out of the Navy. Fortunately, things have changed drastically in the past 30 or 40 years!
