Helping Marines with Their Out-Processing

When it comes time to transition out of Marine life and enter the civilian world, your Marine out-processing should be a time of education and preparation, not stress. You can take advantage of several options offered to the corps through the official Marine Corps Website, where you will find information on retirement and separations, as well as civilian careers with the Corps if you are interested in staying involved with your branch, and aren't sure which career direction you'd like to pursue. You'll find more specific information at the official site of your base.

What You Will Need to Do When Out-Processing From the Marines

You'll be required to do the necessary paperwork and get the proper departmental sign-offs, insuring you're not leaving with anything that doesn't belong to you, etc. You'll also need to undergo the same physical examination you enjoyed when you joined the corps. Once given a clean bill of health, you'll be well on your way to civilian life.

There is much to consider at this point. Questions that need to be answered about the immediate future that lies before you: Where are you going, and what will you do once you get there? Do you want a job, to go to college or do you want to pursue a career? Whatever the case may be, PostMilitary.com wants to help you answer any question you may have during your first steps into the civilian world to ensure they are down the right path.

Helpful Sites for Marines After Military Service

We've begun consolidating a list of recommended sites for you to check out.  Come back often as we'll be updating the site daily with the latest information, links and news.

Together We Served is a unique, feature rich resource helping Marines stay faithful to the Brotherhood of the Corps.  Once you've joined the community you'll be able to re-connect, share memories and your personal story with others.  It's always good to stay in touch with people you've built strong memories with and this site does a great job allowing you to do just that.

The moving business is a total racket... if you aren't careful you may find yourself stuck with an outlandish bill or damaged goods upon arrival.  We recommend you complete your due diligence prior to signing a contract with a moving company.  Remember the people you are speaking with are salesmen or women and their goal is to get you to sign with their company.  They may promise you the world.

Moving:

  • Top Moving Companies - This allows you to compare multiple moving companies at one time.  Be prepared to field multiple sales reps calling to try and sell you.  I used this feature and had to  drop hammers on everyone that called me.  It is a good way to get multiple quotes at one time.
  • Uhaul - There's nothing like doing it yourself.
  • Penske - This is the company I used when I moved from Fort Bragg to San Diego.  I put my little Honda Civic in the back of one of their big trucks and made it all the way to Arizona in 36 hours.  I flew my cousin out to help with the drive.  Couple cans of copenhagen and a 12 pack of Mountain Dew...It was all good.
  • Apartment Hunter - Great service that allows you to search for apartments nationwide.  There are many apartment searches out there but this one is great.
  • Real Estate - Compare Real Estate Agencies, their fees, etc... Your best bet is to take your time shopping around prior to jumping into a new home.  Get an apartment on a month to month and decide which area you want to live in first.  Once you've narrowed that down start shopping for  motivated sellers willing to give you a break because their mortgage is more than they bargained for.

Careers and Education:

  • Careers and Education - This is a comprehensive site that will allow you to search for degrees and career programs to match your long term goals.
  • ResumeEdge - They will help you write your resume so that you can land your dream job.
  • EssayEdge - If you're interested in going to college, they will help you edit your admissions essay.
  • Monster Jobs - Find your perfect job with Monster.  I'm a little biased towards using Monster as they were the ones that helped me find my first employer in the search engine marketing world.  They also have a very strong and recognizable brand.
  • NextStudent - They will help you consolidate your student loans.
