Using Self Assessment in Personal Development

The military offers a self assessment plan called the Mental Health Self Assessment Program (or MHSAP). The program is offered to more than one and a half million military families in many service branches. This includes the National Guard and the Army Reserve.

These self assessments can be done online in an interactive format or in-person. The Mental Health Self Assessment program also provides referrals and information about services on mental health. This is provided by the Department of Defense and Veteran Affairs.

For those without easy access to the Internet, there is also a free phone self assessment line. It is prerecorded and interactive. You just follow the prompts to answer questions about yourself and your unique situation. No one has to know you are calling. Confidentiality is important, and it is also important that you get help if you are struggling or overwhelmed. Taking action is something to be proud of!

MHSAP also gives out kits for free, which included an implementation and program guide, screening forms, educational brochures, a banner, posters, a video, and other give-away products containing helpful messages.

What can these self assessments do? They help you and your family recognize and face stresses in your life, especially those caused because of life changes due to being in the military. They can also help with anger, aggression, concentration issues, and alcohol abuse. The self assessments are anonymous and can be done for a number of different problems, including:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Alcohol abuse
  • PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Depression
Do not hesitate to use self assessment tools to sharpen your saw, to minimize stress and to aid your transition process out of the military and into your second career.
