Social and Cultural Goal Setting for Post Military Professionals

All active service members have something in common. Being part of the military means being part of a large network of highly trained professionals, enjoying a certain camaraderie. Life after the military can be a difficult adjustment, but with some social and cultural goals for post-military professionals, veterans can learn how to acclimate.
Being a CivilianThere are a lot of differences between active service members and civilians, and sometimes these difference can seem very great. There are even different ways of speaking, different words used by each group. For many post-military professionals, simply being a civilian and making new friends can be difficult. Start out by setting small social and cultural goals, and soon you'll feel like one of the group.
Make an effort to meet new people. Veterans can meet new people, outside the military framework, by simply getting involved with activities and/or the work force. Having a part or full-time job is a great way to get to know a lot of people. An easy place to find jobs is at Monster. It's also a good idea to join sports groups, bowling leagues, etc., in order to meet new people and make new friends. Set one small social goal at a time, and soon you won't have to rely on taking these steps to make friends and adjust to post-military life.
Adjusting to Cultural DifferencesSome post-military professionals may have to adjust to a whole new cultural order, different ideals and beliefs. It's hard enough to adjust to a whole new, post-military lifestyle, and harder still to adjust to different cultures. Make an effort to learn what these cultural beliefs and ideas are by getting involved with the community. Attend religious services (another great way to meet new people and make new friends) to learn more about the culture that surrounds you. It's also a good idea to talk to new people you meet about cultural differences, ideas, and beliefs. Veterans will find that most people are only too happy to help them adjust to a new social and cultural world.
Many veterans, after they get over the initial shock of a new environment, learn that meeting social and cultural goals isn't so hard after all. Start by getting involved, being open and friendly with new people, and immersing yourself in your new social and cultural environment. You might be surprised how easy it is, in the end, to adjust.
