Benefits | Money for School

One of the many benefits of serving your country in the military is money for school.

Each branch of the service has the ability to pay up to 100 percent of the tuition expenses for its members. Each branch has its own criteria for eligibility. Tuition assistance is not a loan; you should view it as money you've earned, just like your base pay.

The Montgomery GI Bill also provides money for school. The GI Bill is an education benefit given to active duty, selected reserve, National Guard and veterans. The benefits are designed to help service members cut the costs associated with getting an education or training. There are several programs under the GI Bill and all of them are administered differently.

Scholarships, also known as free money for school, are also available to service members, veterans and their families. There are over $300 million in scholarships and grants available to the military. Many of these scholarships go unclaimed because they tend to be overlooked. Check online at FastWeb to see what scholarships you might qualify to receive.

Many military personnel are also eligible for state tuition assistance, fee reductions or waivers. It's not a whole lot of money for school, but at least it saves you some money.

Money for school is not limited to yourself, there is also money available for your spouse and your children. Veterans Affairs offers the spouse and dependents education assistance program. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. If you are the survivors of a veteran, you are also entitled to money for school. Educational benefits are provided by the state for the children of deceased, MIA, POW and disabled veterans.
