Career | Military Transition Assistance

The United States Military takes care of its own; this even extends to those who are transitioning out of the military.

When you decide to leave the military, there are a number of options available to you. For many, finding a second career in the civilian workforce is the first priority. Finding a job that fits the skills you possess and also fits within your separation date can be stressful. That's why the military provides mandatory transition assistance to all service members who will be leaving the armed forces.

Transition assistance is available at every military base and installation as required by the federal government. Each transitioning service member must be provided with a "pre-separation" counseling session no less than 90 days prior to separation. Servicemen and women who have not received counseling will not be fully separated from the military.

Transition assistance also includes employment assistance (from resume writing sessions to information on career fairs), job training assistance and counseling on VA benefits and services. You should begin to seek transition assistance at least one year prior to your separation date. During this time you may take advantage of job training that is needed to qualify you for your career objective.

Don't wait until after your military separation to begin transition plans. You should begin your job search 12 months prior to your date of separation. Transition Assistance offers workshops and will help you explore your options if you need additional educational or vocational training in order to compete in the job market. Through transition assistance, you can also receive more information on the education benefits awarded to former military personnel.

If you're stationed abroad, transition assistance is also available to you. Transition assistance briefings are conducted at US military installations throughout the globe.
