Veteran Benefits Guide for Health Care

If you dedicated your life to the military and are retired, you and your dependents are eligible for health care benefits through the Department of Veteran's Affairs.

The best way to learn about Veteran health care benefits is at a Veteran's Affairs briefing. Briefings presented by VA benefits counselors are held regularly on all major military installations. VA counselors can tell you about your benefits, outline eligibility criteria, answer your questions and give you advice on filling out your applications.

To be eligible for VA health care benefits, you must first be enrolled in the program. You are not required to apply for enrollment if you fall into the following categories:

  • VA has rated you as a 50 percent or more service-connected
  • Less than one year has passed since you were discharged from the military for a disability that the military has determined was received or aggravated in the line of duty
  • you are seeking care from the VA for a service-connected disability
  • You can apply for enrollment at a VA health care facility.
Once enrolled, you will remain enrolled from year to year without any further action on your part. You may choose not to be re-enrolled at any point. The VA will announce and widely publicize any enrollment changes.

Some veterans are required to make health care co-payments or complete an annual means test to maintain their eligibility for health care. Whether you already have health insurance or not, it does not affect your eligibility for VA health care benefits.
