As a service member, you receive plenty of perks, including health benefits. In order to access these benefits, you and your family need to go through a few steps. Moreover, if you ever have questions about your health care, there are many ways you can have them answered.
How To Activate Your TRICARE AccountFirstly, active duty service members and their families must register with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). The database contains the information of everyone in the military who is eligible for TRICARE benefits. If you need to make changes or update your personal information, go online or talk to a DEERS representative on the phone or in person at the nearest office.
TRICARE Health Benefits In And Out Of The ServiceOnce you are in the system, you and your family should contact a Beneficiary Service Representative (BSR) to start the enrollment process. Learn about the different TRICARE options available by reading the TRICARE handbook or visiting the TRICARE site online to determine which one fits your situation best.
After you leave the service, you can get temporary health care through the Continued Health Care Benefit Program (CHCBP) as long as you enroll within 60 days of discharge. Whatever your original plan was will factor into what benefits you can keep receiving.
How To Contact Your TRICARE RepresentativeBeneficiaries with questions about their benefits should contact the regional manage care support contractor (MCSC) by phone or at the TRICARE Service Centers in the area to speak with a representative in person. These people can talk to you about enrollment, TRICARE network providers, claims, referrals and authorizations. TRICARE Service Centers are located around the world, so you can receive beneficiary assistance overseas.
If either phone or an in-person representative has already assisted you, get in touch with another resource, the Beneficiary Counseling and Assistance Coordinator (BCAC). BCACs work at TRICARE Regional Offices and help you answer questions regarding medical coverage and benefits, working with regional contractors on health care issues and so forth. Find the number to call your regional office toll-free at tricare.mil.
