Finance Your Post Military Education With The Tuition Assistance Program

The Armed Forces Tuition Assistance Program is a benefit for members of the U.S. armed forces that can provide tuition assistance of up to 100 percent for courses taken during off-duty hours. Exactly how much tuition assistance you will receive will depend upon the eligibility requirements of your particular branch of the service. Tuition Assistance is not a loan, it is a benefit of your military service just as your salary is.

Breakdown Of Tuition Assistance

The U.S. armed forces offers up to $250 per semester credit hour, $166 per quarter credit hour and $4,500 per fiscal year. This amount covers tuition, lab fees, enrollment fees, computer fees and other special fees and both active duty servicemen and reservists are eligible.

Applying For The Tuition Assistance Program

Those in the service can apply for tuition assistance online. Airmen should use the Air Force portal at My.AF.Mil, soldiers should go to GoArmyEd, sailors and Marines can download NETPDTC_1560.doc from USMC-MCCS.org.

Requirements For The Tuition Assistance Program

Requirements for the program vary depending on the branch of service and you should consult your branch’s education portal for specifics. You may need to submit a degree plan, to get approval from your commanding officer and to maintain a certain grade point average. Not all schools and courses may be covered. Books may not be covered. Eligibility exams might be required. Your service branch will have more information when you apply.

Reasons For Making Use Of The Tuition Assistance Program

Once you are discharged from your branch of the service you will probably be looking for civilian employment. A quality education can be the key to expanded career choices and better job opportunities. Paying for and taking part in higher education while holding down a job can be difficult, so it is important to take advantage of the tuition assistance that you have earned through your service.
