The Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) program represents a consortium of colleges and universities who work together to make sure that military personnel have the resources they need to earn college and graduate degrees. SOCAD is the Army division of the SOC program and provides opportunities to earn associate and bachelor degrees at Army installations all over the world. Soldiers can participate in the program so that by the time they reach civilian life, they are veterans with the education they need to have the opportunity for a great career.
How Does The SOCAD Program Work?SOCAD students designate a “home” college from which their degree will be based. Ideally, the home college is a school near your area of assignment. You take courses from the home college as normal. If you are deployed elsewhere over the course of your studies, you can take courses in your degree program at any of the hundreds of schools participating in SOCAD and your credits will automatically transfer to your home school. You will have developed a degree plan with clear requirements before you begin your studies, and once you complete the requirements of the plan, you will earn your degree that you can take with you into the civilian world as a veteran.
How Can Soldiers Enroll At SOCADSoldiers should proceed to their Army Education Center and meet with a representative who will help them choose a course of study and find their home college. The soldier will enroll in the school and the home college will then evaluate the student through testing and an examination of their educational and military history to design a degree plan. Whenever a student moves to a different location, he or she should bring the degree plan to a counselor at his or her new Army Education Center. That counselor will help the soldier find a school and coursework locally to continue his or her degree.
What Can Veterans Do With A Degree Earned Through SOCAD?A degree earned through SOCAD is no different from any other college degree. Veterans can use their degree to help them get a desirable job or as a springboard for further education in civilian life.
