The Navy College-At-Sea Program (NCPACE)

A good education is of critical importance for our Navy men and women. It not only makes the better sailors, it prepares them better for the transition to civilian life, where a good education could mean the difference in landing the job they want. However, it can be a real challenge to get the education you need when you’re out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, which is where the Navy College-at-sea Program comes in.

NCPACE

The Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE) can be the educational answer for many sailors. This program allows sailors to continue their academic education while on assignment at sea.

How NCPACE Works

NCPACE courses are tuition free and are offered by accredited universities and colleges according to the Department of Education. Students are responsible to pay for textbooks and other course materials, however. The program is offered in conjunction with SOCNAV, the Navy branch of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges program, so if a degree is not completed by the end of the tour, sailors will still have the opportunity to finish their studies at their home college with all their credits intact. Classes are taught both online and in regular classroom settings on board.

Participating In NCPACE

Not all active duty ships will offer NCPACE to their crew. To participate in NCPACE you will need to be assigned to a command that subscribes to the program. The command will have to design an acceptable education plan with the courses that the sailors need to complete their degree. If the Navy College Office approves the plan, orders will be submitted to the Naval Education and Training Development and Technology Center (NETPDTC) who will send a representative on board to begin setting up the program that all interested sailors can register for.
