The Navy tuition assistance program can help cover the cost of college, vocational or certification training. Tuition assistance covers both classroom and distance learning courses.
Navy tuition assistance will pay $250 per semester credit hour and limits sailors to 12 semester credit hours per year. However, waivers to the semester credit hour limits may be considered for exceptional circumstances. Navy tuition assistance will pay for published fees related to course enrollment, but monies will not be used to purchase textbooks or reading materials for the course.
To be eligible for Navy tuition assistance, you must be an active duty Navy enlisted or officer. Reservists are also eligible if they will be recalled to active duty for 120 days. Service members must be on active duty for the duration of the course. You must attend an institution accredited by a regional, national or professional accrediting body. You must receive counseling from a Navy College Office and if you fail or withdraw from a course, you must reimburse the Navy. Officers who apply for Navy tuition assistance must remain on active duty for at least two years following completion of the courses funded through tuition assistance.
Due to the cap on credit hours per semester, Navy tuition assistance program managers encourage sailors to take advantage of the college credit by examination programs and gaining college credit for military experience.
The Navy is also seeking to encourage senior enlisted personnel to use Navy tuition assistance to pursue degrees to complement their Navy training and experience.
