Financial aid is available in a variety of forms for veterans. Financial aid can work together will other military education benefits, giving you an all expenses paid college education.
Unlike the GI Bill, tuition assistance and scholarships; military financial aid must usually be paid back. The Federal Student Financial Aid Programs offer veterans low interest loans. Grants are also available, and unlike student loans, grants do not have to be paid back.
Financial Aid is paid through your school; but unlike the majority of the college benefits managed by the military, financial aid can be used to pay the cost of tuition, books, fees, and living expenses while you go to school. This means once the school has taken its share for tuition and fees, the rest of the financial aid balance is available for you to use at your discretion.
To become eligible for financial aid, you must meet the following requirements:
- A high school graduate, or have a General Education Development (GED) certificate
- You are working toward a degree or certificate
- You are enrolled in an eligible school or program
- You are a US citizen or an eligible non-citizen (this means you must have a social security number)
- You are registered with the Selective Service
It doesn't matter whether you are active duty, a reservist, on the GI Bill or not; all military personnel are eligible for financial aid.
Remember, you must apply for financial aid after you have enrolled in college. You may apply for all available financial aid. To find financial aid for yourself, go to FastWeb to get a comprehensive list of aid that might be available to you. Your school will later notify you regarding which types of loans, grants and the total amounts that you qualified to receive.
