Coast Guard Tuition and Education Assistance

Guarding our nations' ports can be your gateway to a better education through Coast Guard tuition assistance.

Active duty, reserve and civilian employees of the Coast Guard are eligible for Coast Guard tuition assistance. Coast Guard tuition assistance will cover up to $250 semester credit hours and up to $4,500 per year.

Those who are interested in the Coast Guard tuition assistance program must apply through the Navy's computer database.

Tuition assistance is authorized for traditional college coursework either in the classroom or through distance learning. There is no limitation on Coast Guard tuition assistance if you are receiving additional financial aid. Courses must be taken from a nationally or regionally accredited institution. Coast Guard tuition assistance may be used for developmental courses if it is required by the institution before taking a freshman level course. Some colleges require developmental courses in Math, English and Reading if you have been out of school for several years.

Coast Guard tuition assistance does not cover the following expenses: purchasing textbooks, application or enrollment fees, record-maintenance fees, student activities fees, course registration fees, parking fees, or certification courses and tests.

Officers taking advantage of the Coast Guard tuition assistance program must complete one year of service after completion of the course. Civilian employees with at least 90 days of continuous employment with the Coast Guard may apply for Coast Guard tuition assistance. Upon completion of their courses, civilian employees must remain employed with the Coast Guard for at least one month for each credit hour earned under the Coast Guard tuition assistance program.
