Benefits | Disability Services

If you are leaving the military with a service-connected disability, Veterans Affairs will provide for your medical care.

However, be aware that the VA makes a distinction between veterans based on the nature of their disabilities. Whether your disability is connected to your time in the service or not determines the cost and availability of VA medical services.

A veteran who was disabled by injury or disease acquired or aggravated in the line of duty will receive mandatory VA medical care. This means service will be provided at no cost to the veteran. Those veterans whose disability originated outside the line of duty will receive VA medical care on a space available basis and will have to make a co-payment.

Veterans whose disabilities occurred in the line of duty may also be eligible for disability compensation. If you were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions, you can receive up to $2,471 in monthly benefits. You may be paid additional amounts if:
  • You have very severe disabilities or suffered loss of limb(s)
  • You have a spouse, children or dependent parents
  • You have a seriously disabled spouse

The VA also offers a vocational rehabilitation program that provides services and assistance to veterans who were disabled in the line of duty. Vocational rehab may allow these veterans to become independent and obtain and maintain suitable employment. Vocational rehab services include assessment, counseling, training, subsistence allowances and employment assistance. The VA will also assist you with job placement. While you are enrolled in the Vocational Rehab program, the VA pays the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment.
