The Usefulness of Military Job Boards

Have you ever used a military job board?  Do you wonder if they are at all useful?  The short answer is: They are.  In fact, if you are doing a job search without adding military job boards to your search, then you could be missing out on a number of opportunities – not just on jobs that are common post-military options, but employers who are military-friendly, a very important criteria.

The first step towards finding a military friendly employer is seeking out a job that typically sees a lot of military applicants, such as aerospace, law enforcement, civil engineering, and others.  You can’t always guarantee that employers in other industries will be military-friendly.  For example, a more general profession such as restaurant work will see both military-friendly and military-indifferent employers.  However, if you’re able to seek out military-friendly employers in jobs that aren’t necessarily popular with servicemen and women then you’ll be a step ahead of other applicants.

Using Military Job Boards

The best way to do this is by using military job boards.  Here you can find listings for jobs that are popular with postmilitary workers and those that are not.  With the ease of the job search on the Internet, many outgoing military personnel might use a common site like Monster or Careerbuilder.com.  While these are obviously useful, you may be missing out on a number of employment opportunities if you limit yourself to these mainstream boards.

Military job boards are comprised of employment opportunities that prize the experience and skills of military personnel.  It’s a good idea to check more than one job board, as there will be varied listings, just as there are with Monster, Jobs.com, and the like.  You cannot be guaranteed that any one board will have job postings for opportunities in your area.  In all, you should cast a wide net: a series of military job boards, as well as more traditional routes of Monster and the local classifieds.

Helping with the Postmilitary Job Search

It’s also recommend that you check out military job boards if you are not sure what post-military career to pursue.  One of the hardest decisions to make is how to put your military experience towards a long term career.  At the very least, checking with a military job board can give you ideas about different career paths that are popular post-military options.

A piece of advice: don’t just go by the number of jobs available, though this is obviously important, check to see which career path interests you most.  You’ll be hard-pressed to be successful in a career that doesn’t fit your skills or interest, so choose a career path that is truly in line with your personal desire, rather than choosing it based on job availability and salary.  The ideal situation is to find a job that matches both your skills and has a wide range of openings available.
