After leaving the military, many veterans find themselves searching for jobs that do not really fit their personality or job training. One service member found himself asking the same question before developing a program aimed specifically at assisting veterans with finding a suitable career. Firefighter Erik Rosendahl, an ex-Army sergeant living in Vancouver, has developed a new program called Boots to Boots, which helps veterans make the transition from the armed forces to new careers as firemen.
How Boots To Boots Assists VeteransRosendahl left the Army in 1994, only to find that civilian life lacked the order he craved. “There didn’t seem to be much structure in the outside world,” he said. After earning an associate’s degree, his brother-in-law convinced him to join the fire department.
He worked in Montana before transferring to the Vancouver Fire Department in 2003, where as part of his training, Rosendahl had to create a project that would help his department. Thus, Boots to Boots developed as a “veterans mentorship program.”
Why Firefighting Works For VeteransFirefighters and military personnel share many commonalities in their job duties, such as arduous working conditions and demanding physical abilities. Other military skills, like discipline, teamwork and being able to perform under pressure are all incredibly adaptable to firefighting.
Not only are the skill sets the same, but being a firefighter also gives you a great salary, benefits, a chance to advance in ranking and a sense of satisfaction helping the community. It is important to have a job that does not just pay the bills, yet one that reflects your values and the fire department is an excellent match.
How To Become Involved In Boots To BootsBecoming a firefighter requires at least a high school diploma, completing written and oral tests, passing a background check and going through a physical test. Afterward, you will have to graduate from training at the firefighter academy, as well as become certified as an emergency medical technician or EMT.
With Boots to Boots, you will pair up with a mentor who will help guide you through the process. Even if you are only mildly interested in the idea of becoming a firefighter, you can still contact the program by emailing Justin Carinci at
