Despite the fact that many choose to form a career in the military, other service members leave for jobs and an education outside of the armed forces. A number of available resources help make the transition from military personnel to civilian worker a smooth one. Two programs stand out as options for career placement -- the ACAP and PaYS.
ACAP -- Helping Veterans Find CareersACAP, which stands for the Army Career and Alumni Program, helps soldiers prepare for jobs by detailing prerequisites like education, certification and credentials. The program also offers online resources on how to obtain certificates or job searching skills like writing a resume and interviewing techniques. There is also a website with employer listings as well as chances to attend job fairs.
PaYS -- Post-Military Job HuntingPaYS, or Partnership for Youth Success, supports soldiers with job placement and is available to those who sign up for the program with their enlistment package. It allows service members to choose a company to interview with after they have completed their tour of duty. Some of the companies PaYS works with to create jobs for ex-soldiers include State Farm Insurance, Southwest Airlines, Deere & Company and Walgreen’s, among many others across the country.
In addition, PaYS gives an overview of the job plus what training or qualification you will need. Soldiers can take any necessary tests at the education center while on active duty, thereby preparing them in advance for a future job right after they finish their service.
Certification Tests For Careers Out Of The MilitaryThe Army will reimburse soldiers for the costs of certification tests, which can help offset any future career costs. Some of these tests are upwards of $700, so take advantage of this opportunity and complete the tests for anything you think will relate to possible jobs.
Whether you choose to work with the PaYS or ACAP programs, you can still earn the credentials you need to land you the job after your service is completed. Remember that these programs set up thousands of other active duty members with jobs, so find out more and start planning for your future out of the military.
