How To Find A Job After Leaving The Marines

Searching for a job is difficult, no matter what the kind of work. A military background is certainly eye-catching on a resume, but only if applied to the right career. Here is a look at three different jobs with great pay and, more importantly, comparable work values as those when you were in the Marines.

From Marine To Corporate Job

Jobs in the corporate world appreciate the same traits as the military: integrity, teamwork and a solid work ethic. Even if you never considered working in an office, a managerial position may be the perfect complement to reentering civilian life. You have the chance to create proposals, implement your ideas and manage a crew, something akin to what you experienced in the Marines

Remove traces of military jargon on your resume and replace them with their civilian equivalents. For example, change ranks to manager, and so forth. Discuss your military accomplishments in terms that make sense in the business world and exemplify your leadership abilities, like leading a team on an assignment.

Find job prospects by networking with companies through online resources, military friends or other veterans. During the interview, talk about specific situations in which you were able to solve problems or execute plans effectively.

From Marine To A Job In Law Enforcement

The job description for law enforcement officials is much like the role you played in the military. Furthermore, the work environment and culture is similar, given that police officers follow a strict hierarchy of authority and have to cooperate with others while obeying orders. With the same career values, a job in law enforcement not only offers great benefits and an opportunity to serve your community, but it is probably one of the best job matches for veterans.

In order to become a copy, you will need to pass a series of written, oral and physical tests, as well as pass a psychological evaluation and background check. Be sure to bring your DD-214 with you to interviews because it explains and supports your military history and makes you stand out above other candidates. If selected, you need to go through police academy training before wearing the uniform.

From Marine To Firefighter

Like law enforcements, there are plenty of parallels between firefighters and service members. Structure, discipline and working in a team are all necessary for battling forces of nature. There is also a high probability of advancement, on top of benefits. Additionally, a commitment to helping the public, physical endurance and being able to handle a strenuous working environment are required.

To become a firefighter, you will have to train at the firefighting academy and pass written tests, a physical and background check, as with law enforcement. You also need to certification as an emergency medical technician or EMT. Firefighter training involves a bit more work than becoming a cop, but it provides the same kind of satisfaction and challenge you had as a Marine.

As a veteran of the armed forces, you may find yourself unemployed for a while after leaving the service. However, these career fields or plenty of other jobs will help you transition back into civilian life.
