Oldest and Longest Branch of Military Service Did you know that the National Guard is the oldest portion of the military's armed forces of the U.S.? It's staggering to consider that the National Guard is over 370 years old! The National Guard has been sustained over the longest period of time over any other service branch.
English ColoniesThe National Guard actually goes back to the English colonies way back in America's infancy. Because those English colonies had to defend themselves, they took some military tradition from the English and organized troops for their defense. These troops protected the colony members from attacks from Indians and other invaders. They also later helped to win a little battle you may have heard of called the Revolutionary War. The National Guard today is a force maintained on both a State and Federal level.
National Guard SupportThere are various National Guard Associations across the country that supports those who have served, are currently serving, and will serve in the Army National Guard. They aim to preserve the history of the Guard. Many organizations also provide services to help those associated with the Guard. National Guardsmen, including past service members, are encouraged to get involved and help the various committees with your skills and talent. An organization exists for virtually every state, so find yours and show your support!
Interesting National Guard FactsDid you know that the state that deployed the most National Guard soldiers during the Gulf War than any other state was Tennessee? Also, George Bush, our 43rd president, was a pilot in the Air National Guard of Texas from 1968 to 1973.
