Helping Marines Prepare for Separation

Serving in the United States Marine Corps is one of the highest honors that any person can achieve, but transitioning to civilian life after separation can be a serious challenge for many Marines. Don't let your separation from the Marines cause you hardship. If you can formulate a long-term plan for what you will do after your separation, you'll position yourself for success in the future. Here are some suggestions on how to make your transition to civilian life go by a bit smoother.

Getting Started -- The Transition Assistance Office

Six months before you're scheduled to separate from the Marines, set up a preparation assistance counseling appointment at the Transition Assistance Office. Workshops and guidance will be available to help you answer questions about your upcoming transition. Look into the Relocation Assistance Program for guidance on choosing a new destination, buying a home and settling into your new community. make sure to schedule a physical so that you can take care of any health problems while you are still fully covered under your insurance plan. Start saving money as well so that your finances will be in order as you transition to civilian life.

By covering all your bases before your separation, you can make your transition from the Marines a smooth process. Just make sure that you get all the information and assistance you need before you begin your new life as a civilian.
