The Continental Congress formed the U.S. Marines on Nov. 10, 1775. The U.S. Marine Corps is a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of the Navy, though it behaves as a separate military branch. Marines specialize in force projection by sea and tend to work with the Navy in terms of training and transportation, as well as logistic operations.
