Army Career and Alumni Program: Giving Transitioning Soldiers the Opportunities They Deserve

The Army uses the Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) to prepare soldiers for their upcoming transition into civilian life. To have eligibility for this opportunity, over six months soldiers must attend workshops, meetings about post-military career opportunities, etc. for at least 40 hours. The specific ACAP center in charge of a soldier’s jurisdiction will issue a notification process, which begins registration and scheduling the soldier for future visits. The orientation is a two-hour long briefing discussing a soldier’s transition perks and available avenues for assistance. By signing a Department of Defense (DOD) Form 2648, a soldier acknowledges his receipt of this introductory session and their subsequent desire for more knowledge and access to additional services.
ACAP Workshops: Post-Military, Professional, Financial and Life Goals
The next stage of the ACAP process is the workshop phase. These two or three day classes offer a wealth of knowledge concerning the skill requirements and information soldiers need to reach their post-military, professional, financial or other life goals. These workshops also offer other post military options. In addition to educating transitioning soldiers about future civilian career opportunities, they also inform them about possible experiences with the National Guard and the Federal Reserves. Participating in these fields of the military can lead to financial stability and professional development.

Despite attending numerous classes and workshops, soldiers must declare a personal objective based on past experience, interest, training and the modern job market. Once he has accomplished this, he must compile references, a resume, setup interviews and the other necessary steps toward getting a job. Trained counselors are available for assistance. This is vital, especially considering most soldiers have not sought out many professional jobs prior to their service. This program is hands-on and assists transitioning soldiers by teaching them how to make and maintain connections with the U.S. Military and the hiring companies with which they associate.
